Ingredient Notes

Vegan ladyfingers: I use my homemade vegan ladyfinger recipe. They are lightand sturdy enough to soak up the espresso without collapsing. I recommend making a full batch so you have extras if needed.

Vegan cream cheese: Use a sturdy vegan cream cheese for the mascarpone-style filling so the layers hold their shape once chilled. If you prefer to make your own, you can use my homemade vegan cream cheese recipe.

Coconut whipping cream: This needs to be well chilled before using. I use Nature's Charm coconut whipping cream, which whips smoothly and sets nicely once chilled.

Vegan Greek-style yogurt: Adds a gentle tang that balances the sweetness and helps mimic the texture of traditional mascarpone.

Ube sweetened condensed coconut milk: This recipe uses the ube condensed milk by Nature's Charm, which adds both sweetness and ube flavor to both the cream and the espresso soak. You can use leftovers for other ube desserts like ube flan

Espresso: Brew fresh espresso and allow it to cool completely before dipping the ladyfingers, so it doesn't melt the cream layers.

Ube powder (optional): A light dusting just before serving adds color and a subtle earthy flavor.

You can prepare the ladyfinger cookies up to 3 days in advance, which makes assembling the tiramisu much easier. If baking them the same day, just give them at least an hour to cool completely before layering, so they hold their structure when dipped.

For the ube mascarpone cream, start by whipping the vegan cream cheese until completely smooth. This step makes all the difference for a lump-free filling. Then whisk in the vegan yogurt and coconut whipping cream until light and creamy. Add the ube sweetened condensed milk in two additions, mixing well after so everything stays silky and well incorporated.

For the espresso soak, whisk the espresso with the ube condensed milk until fully dissolved, then add the non-dairy milk. The key here is balance - you want it flavorful but not overly sweet.

When assembling, spread a thin layer of cream on the base of your dish first. This helps anchor the ladyfingers so they don't slide around. Dip each ladyfinger quickly into the espresso mixture - just a brief dunk on each side. If you soak them too long, they'll become overly soft, and the layers will collapse.

Layer half of the dipped ladyfingers, followed by half of the cream, smoothing it out evenly with an offset spatula for clean layers. Repeat with the remaining ladyfingers and cream, finishing with a smooth top.

Let the tiramisu chill for at least 4 hours, but overnight is even better. The longer it rests, the more the layers set and the flavors meld together beautifully.

💬 FAQs

What is ube?

Ube is a purple yam commonly used in Filipino desserts. It has a mildly sweet, earthy flavor and gives this tiramisu its natural purple color.

Can I make this gluten-free?

Yes, as long as you use gluten-free vegan ladyfingers or sponge biscuits that can handle soaking. These can be tricky to find, so feel free to swap them out for other gluten-free cookies of your choice.

Can I make this without coffee?

You can replace the espresso with a coffee alternative or a simple non-dairy milk soak, though it will change the classic tiramisu flavor.

How long does vegan tiramisu last? Can I freeze it?

Stored in the fridge, covered, it will keep well for 3-4 days. Freezing isn't recommended, as it can affect the texture of the cream layers once thawed.

Christina Leopold
This vegan ube tiramisu is a twist on the classic Italian dessert with layers of espresso-soaked ladyfingers and creamy ube dairy-free mascarpone. It's naturally egg-free and dairy-free, easy to make ahead, and sets beautifully in the fridge for the perfect sliceable dessert.

Total Time 4 hours 30 minutes

Ingredients

Prep Ahead (1-3 days in advance

Mascarpone Cream

Espresso Soak

  • 80 ml ( cup) espresso freshly brewed + cooled to room temperature
  • 80 g (¼ cup) ube sweetened condensed coconut milk
  • 120 ml (½ cup) non-dairy milk

Topping (optional, to serve)

  • 2 tablespoons ube powder

Instructions

Prep Ahead

  • Prepare the vegan ladyfingers up to 3 days ahead of time, or prep them an hour before making the tiramisu to give them time to cool.

Mascarpone Cream

  • Add the vegan cream cheese to a large mixing bowl and whisk with an electric mixer until smooth and creamy. Whisk in the vegan yogurt and coconut whipping cream, then add the ube sweetened condensed milk in two additions, whisking until fully combined.

Espresso Soak

  • In a shallow bowl or flat container, whisk together the espresso and ube sweetened condensed milk until smooth, then whisk in the non-dairy milk.

Assembly

  • Add 4 tablespoons of the mascarpone cream to the bottom of your dish and spread it in an even layer.
  • Quickly dunk half of the ladyfinger cookies into the espresso mixture and arrange them in a single layer on top.
  • Add half of the remaining mascarpone cream on top and spread it in an even layer using an offset spatula.
  • Follow with a second layer of dipped ladyfingers and the second half of the cream mixture. Smooth out the top with an offset spatula.
  • Place it in the fridge to chill and set for at least 4 hours/overnight - the longer it chills the more set it will become.
  • Just before serving, dust the ube powder on top of the tiramisu.

Notes

  1. Vegan Ladyfingers: The recipe uses 24-26 cookies, but I recommend making a full batch of 32 in case you need extra.
  2. Vegan Cream Cheese & Yogurt: You can replace these ingredients with 2x batches of this homemade vegan mascarpone if you prefer.
